GOOGLE CS LOGO

Google India CS First Program

Dear Educator:

Hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you that we are launching a pilot for the globally successful CS First program in India. This is the first time we are conducting this program in India. Given your association with Google’s previous programs in computer science, we have chosen your school to be a part of this exclusive invite-only pilot.

CS First is a Google program designed to introduce coding and computer science to students from classes 4-8 in a collaborative and creative club environment.  CS First Club Members build projects in Scratch (scratch.mit.edu), a blocks-based programming language. A CS First Club is hosted by a teacher, who is provided with all club related materials by Google. Students learn from Google educators by watching videos, and then they create projects in classroom settings.

Since this a pilot activity, we will not be directly jumping into club formation. Instead, we will start with a simple activity called “Make your Own Google Logo”, which is loved by students world over. Students get their creative juices flowing by creating a custom Google logo, and learn computer science concepts in the process - which is a very fun and fulfilling learning experience for them.

CS First is designed in a way that you, as a teacher, would facilitate the class where the students learn by watching videos and participating in hands-on activities. The total time commitment from you for the pilot activity will be 30-60 minutes, and will go a long way in benefiting your students.

As a teacher, these are the steps you would need to follow:

  1. Gather a class of 25-40 students for a 30-60 minute session (depending upon class size and infrastructure availability).

  1. Go through the Lesson Plan and walk the students through the steps as mentioned in the Booklet to be shared with you. The program is designed such that you don’t have to especially prepare for conducting the class.

  1. Direct kids to visit: g.co/csfirst/logo, where they can get started.

  1. Assign one computer to each child and give them headphones to listen to the video. If it is not possible to have headphones for everyone, please play the video on a projector screen, and let the students work on their respective computers as they watch the video.

  1. Ensure you reward each student with a certificate (along with a sticker on their certificate) once they complete the assigned activity. Printed certificates and stickers will be sent to you by us.

  1. Please ask students to complete the feedback at: https://bit.ly/2Nv0jzC.

  1. You are requested to share an update with us over email once the session is completed, along with a picture (if possible).

We request you to share tentative number of students participating from your school along with the shipping address for the CS First Kit.

We will look forward to your support in conducting this program in your school. Please do reach out to me if you have any questions.

Thank you!

Best,
Poornima Agarwal
